Although there is no official list of what the best guitar effects pedals are, there are several effects units that are widely believed to be among the best on the market today. Whether it is due to a high profile endorsement or because of their versatility, some pedals are considered to be more worthy than others.

  1. Vox Wah. Probably one of the most used pedals in the history of guitar music, the Vox Wah pedal is a versatile unit that alters the tone signal of the guitar to produce its distinctive sound. Over the years, it has become synonymous with artists as diverse as Jimi Hendrix, Mark Knopfler and Pink Floyd.
  2. MXR Phase 90. Creating an atmospheric sound, the MXR Phase 90 is one of the most popular phase shifter pedals around. Often hailed as the definitive phase effect pedal, the MXR Phase 90 can be heard in everything from jazz to disco. A sturdy metal construction with a simple single control knob to create your sound, the MXR Phase 90 is a longstanding favorite in the guitar community.
  3. Ibanez TS-9 Tube Screamer. Originally released in the 1970's, the Tube Screamer is an overdrive pedal of some esteem. A staple amongst established artists and bedroom guitarists alike, the triple control knob pedal produces enough gain and drive for even the hardest of rockers. With its distinctive bright green finish, sturdy metal construction and range of overdriven tones, the Tube Screamer ranks as one of the best overdrive pedals available today.
  4. Digitech Whammy. The Whammy pedal produces octave notes and squeals through fluctuation of the foot pedal. Much like the Vox Wah in style, the Whammy pedal looks to be little more than an oversized foot pedal. However, its ability to reach high octave notes and to create a whole new dynamic range for the guitar has endeared it to many of today's artists.
  5. Boss DD-3 Digital Delay. With the ability to replicate the notes you are playing at different speeds and much more, the Boss DD-3 is a must have pedal for any guitarist who is a fan of unique effects. Offering three different delay modes and a time control to adjust the spacing between repeated notes, the DD-3 can enable you to create whole new rhythmic structures and sounds at the push of a button.
