If you want to start rock climbing indoors, equipment will be the first thing you'll want to look into. There are a few essential pieces of equipment you'll need for indoor rock climbing. Your indoor rock climbing gear doesn't have to be the most expensive, but you don't want to buy your gear so cheap that it becomes dangerous. Here are some essential pieces of equipment to get you started indoor rock climbing.

  1. Petzl Koda chalk bag. Chalk bags are imperative for indoor climbing. You can't bring a bunch of chalk into a rock gym, so you must get a chalk bag. This particular chalk bag can be attached to your belt or harness. And you wont blow chalk everywhere when you dip into it.
  2. Climbing Shoes. Good climbing shoes are the best piece of climbing equipment a beginner can buy. There aare many different brands and styles, but it's important to pick one that feels good on your foot, are comfortable and reasonably priced. Unless you are attempting extremely difficult routes when you are indoor climbing, shoes will play a huge role in helping to keep your balance.
  3. Black Diamond aspect harness. This harness is versatile and will perform if you plan to go rock climbing indoors or take it on an all day alpine rock climb. This comfortably padded harness uses closed cell foam and it is lightweight and very durable.
  4. Black Diamond rocklock carabiner. You will only need this if you plan to rock climb indoors. This carabiner has a non-snagging lock and it is best for climbing with multiple ropes.
