- "Planescape: Torment." "Planescape: Torment" is an isometric RPG developed by Black Isle Studios in 1999 for the PC. Based off of the "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign, "Planescape," "Planescape:Torment follows The Nameless One, an immortal man who has forgotten everything from his previous lives, including his name. The game focuses on The Nameless One's attempt to recover his memories. The combat itself is a bit lackluster, but the story is absolutely the best writing in a video game. Every character is fantastically developed. The amazing story and fantastic setting are why this is one of the best RPGs of all time.
- "Baldur's Gate II: Shadow of Amn." Another RPG based on a "Dungeons & Dragons" campaign, "Baldur's Gate II" was developed by BioWare and released in 2000 for PC. The story follows the main character on an attempt to free his friend Imoen from a powerful mage named Irenicus. While the story of "Baldur's Gate" may seem simple, it is the interactions with characters in the main city that drive the game. There is a huge amount of ways to play this game, from siding with different factions to taking strongholds based on your current class. Every choice you make has some impact in this game. The combat is standard isometric-style "pause and play" gameplay, which works well with this story driven game. The sheer amount of different ways to play through the rather well written story make this one of the best RPGs of all time.
- "Final Fantasy 6." While most "Final Fantasy" games are fantastic, "Final Fantasy 6" for the SNES is by far the best RPG out of the lot. "Final Fantasy 6" follows a group of adventurers out to stop an empire from taking over the world. Eventually, the game boils down to killing a god. "Final Fantasy 6" blends fantastic combat based on unique abilities pertaining to each character, with an amazing story with tons of character development and plot twists. This is an RPG that is not afraid to kill off important characters. The combination of great gameplay and writing make this one of the best RPGs of all time.
