If you have flat feet, you can't just lace up any old trainer; you need to find the best running shoes for flat feet.  If you have flat feet, chances are, you probably overpronate (i.e. your feet roll inward when you run, to the point that is will cause injury if you don't get running shoes that correct this. Follow these guidelines to find the best running shoes for flat feet:

  1. Figure out how flat your foot is. Go to a specialty running store and have your gait analyzed. Store employees are usually former coaches and runners who are trained in biomechanics and they can determine how much of an arch support you need. The best running shoes for flat feet are going to be something specifically designed to correct your overpronation:  either a motion control shoe or a stability shoe.
  2. The uglier, the better. If you have flat feet, you can't be concerned with appearance. The kind of shoes you want to look for (stability and/or motion control) are built to support your medial arch with a thick, dual density foam. The more ugly foam a shoe has, the more support it offers for flat feet. Note: Some people find running with a "built in" arch unnatural. Make sure you buy your shoe at a store that will let you take it out for a run first.
  3. Look for a brand that specializes in running. Check out the Saucony Stabil Pro Grid CS. The Stabil doesn't feel like you are running in a Motion Control shoe. The Asics Evolution 4 is also very popular among runners with flat feet.
