The best time to visit Hawaii is whenever you can get away. The lush foliage, vibrant colored flowers, and white sandy beaches are enticing visitors year round to this tropical paradise.
The Islands. The six islands are very distinct and each island offers visitors a wide choice of activities, culture, and fun-packed experiences. You can go from the world-renowned Waikiki that is bustling with activity, nightlife, and delicious restaurants to the remote island of Lanai, where you can take your four-wheeler and explore the unique treasure like Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods) that looks like it is from another planet with huge boulders and lunar-type landscape. The islands have festivals, events, and outdoor sports all year round, so the best time to visit is when you can hop a plane and enjoy the fun-filled days and luxurious tropical nights.
Peak Season. The peak tourist season is from November to March. The islands will be more crowded, and the hotel rates will be more expensive during this time of year. The summer months are busy with families. If you are traveling on a budget, you may want to book your trip during the off-season. The best time to visit Hawaii to get the best rates are April, May, September, and October.
Weather. Each island has a dry side and a wet side. The dry side is where most of the resorts are located so the rain is not going to be a deterrent for your trip. The islands rarely get days of continuous rain. The higher elevations can get snow and you can go skiing and snowboarding on Mauna Kea on the Big Island. You have to rent a four-wheeler or hire a guide to get to the snow area and there are no ski lifts, no grooming and no resorts. Wilderness skiing is not for the faint at heart.
The average temperature in Hawaii does not vary very much. April through November is warmer and drier with temperatures between 75-85 F. December and March is a bit cooler, and the temperature can drop to the mid 60's. The trade winds keep things comfortable year-round. You may want to bring a light sweater or jacket for evenings.
Water Activities. Hawaii is world-renowned for its beautiful beaches and the big winter waves that bring surfers from all over the world to the legendary North Shore of Oahu from November through March. The Hawaiian waters are comfortable year-round, averaging 74 degrees F. and reaching close to 80 degrees F. in the summer months.
Whale watching is a very popular activity from late December until May. Peak whale watching months are between January and early April. The humpback whales migrate to Hawaiian waters to breed, give birth, and nurse their young every year.
Attractions and Entertainment. The entertainment, events, and nightlife vary depending on the island that you have chosen to visit. Oahu has exciting entertainment and nightlife from live music, festivals, and events year round. There is never a shortage of attractions, museums, tours, and activities for you to enjoy.
