- Better endurance: Your workout is much more beneficial if you can last long enough to train hard and build muscle. Beta alanine is supposed to help your body endure lifting heavy weights without tiring out.
- Reduced body fat: Depending on your shape, this may or may not be a pleasurable side effect. If you’re already scrawny, losing fat is the last thing you want. But hopefully the beta’s muscle-building properties will overcome that problem.
- Skin irritation: Okay, so this is not a side effect you’ll be looking forward to. Your skin might itch, feel dry or start to rash up. Quit using the product for a few days and see if it goes away. If it does, beta alanine’s probably the culprit.
- Flushing: Flushing isn’t just a quaint synonym for blushing. More than just turning your cheeks red, flushing makes you feel like all the blood has just drained out of your brain and into your face. Definitely not cool.
- Tingling: Now, in case you’re wondering what tingling entails, it’s not exactly a funny, ticklish feeling. It’s more like you’re sitting on pins and needles, or like needles are poking through your skin from the inside-out. Apparently this is a pretty common one.
- Interactions with pregnancy and breast-feeding: So if you’re a guy, this isn’t obviously a problem for you. But if your girlfriend or wife asks for some, don’t give it to her – you might end up with a baby that looks like Arnold Schwarzenegger.
- Icky taste: Okay, so the taste of beta alanine might not be harmful to your body, but it can certainly be a turn-off. Depending on how you take it, it might taste too powdery, too chalky or downright disgusting.
- Too much performance: Taking too much beta alanine might result in a huge energy burst followed by an equally enormous crash when it wears off. Your body can’t handle that sort of power, and it might not even be good for your heart. Only take the recommended dose every time.
- Decreased performance: Taking beta alanine the wrong way – by itself – can possibly have adverse effects, or none at all. It’s best when taken with creatine, not all on its own.
