  1. Use the right bait. One of the most important things to consider while trying to catch big fish is the bait you use. Using the right bait can make a huge difference in how many fish come your way. Earthworms, leeches, minnows, crayfish, sand fleas, and fiddler crabs are all examples of good bait to use while fishing.
  2. Know when to fish. There are certain times when you will catch more fish. Usually, spring and summer are the best seasons to fish because the water is warmer and the fish are ready to eat. The best time of the day to fish is the early afternoon, the late afternoon, and the early evening. This will vary, however, depending on your location and the type of fish you are going for.
  3. Don't reel the fish when he is swimming away. Many beginners make the mistake of trying to reel in a fish that is attempting to swim away once being hooked. You should actually stay calm when this happens, and set your hook and drag. Once the fish slows down, it is time to reel him in.
  4. Be quiet. Fish are not entirely dumb creatures, and they can sense your presence very easily. Walking too heavily or making too much noise is a sure way to never catch any fish. A good fisherman is extremely quiet and attentive, making sure he does not make his presence too obvious to the potentially unsuspecting fish.
  5. Avoid casting shadows. Fish can also see when you are coming if you cast too many shadows onto the water. Approach the water slowly, and make sure you are not facing the sun so that you create dark and heavy shadows on the water. Fish are very aware of any type of disturbances and will notice shadows and will stay away from them.
  6. Choose a good location. Location is perhaps one of the most important aspects of fishing and is a very useful tip for all beginners. Make sure the location you choose has fish in it, plain and simple. If there are not a lot of fish in the area, you are less likely to catch anything. Ask local bait shops, marinas, and angling shops where the best places to fish are. Do your research.
  7. Make a good hook knot. Especially for beginners, making the proper hook knot with smaller hooks can be very challenging. Generally, smaller hooks are better because they are less obvious. Just make sure you have an experienced fisherman teach you how to knot the hook the right way before you start fishing.
  8. Wait and be patient. It is easy to get distracted or discouraged if you have been waiting with no luck for more than ten minutes or so, but you must be patient, still, and wait for results. If you have not had any success after casting for more than fifteen minutes or so, it is time to cast somewhere else and try again.
