Though expensive to make, those into carpentry can make a wooden hot tub from appropriate kind of wood along with supplies that is available with any hardware store selling DIY kits, or a pool store.
Things you will need to build a hot tub:
- Wooden hot tub staves, 3’-5’ long
- Wooden tub bottom
- Tub bands
- Chine joists
- Tub benches
- 2-by-4s
- Carpenter's level
- Screwdriver
- Dowel pins
- Hammer
- Saw
- Nails
- Power drill
- One water pump of 3/4 hp
- Screws
- One water pump of 2 hp
- Hot tub filter
- Hot tub thermowell
- Water heater
- Suction fittings
- Hot tub skimmer
- Hot tub jets
- GFCI
- Timer having manual switch for on/off
- PVC piping
- Epoxy sealant
- Determine the location for the hot tub.
- Lay down chine joists trio uniformly on the hot tub’s measured location with two joists on each end of the area measured and the third one, right in the middle.
- Place the tubs bottom along the joists. The bottom must have holes for the suction and pumps. Check that the joist does not cover the holes. Using the dowel pins secure the bottom.
- Using the screwdriver install the suction fittings in the two holes at the base. Tighten the screws, but make sure it’s very tight.
- Place the wooden tub staves by the length of the tub bottom till they are properly fitted. Make sure that the seams are tightened. Check for the skimmer hole. Place it near the suction hole. Tighten the staves by placing a tub bands pair over the whole assembly.
- Pound four to six nails below and above the bands to hold them in place.
- Coat epoxy sealant to the seams of the wooden planks making sure that no gaps are left. Let it dry for 24 hours.
- Count the wooden planks required for the benches. Cut them accordingly; two-by-fours will be required to aid them. Cut to proper size. The bench must not be deeper than 26 inches below the water line.
- Fix the two-by-fours in place by securing them to the tubs’ sides using bolts. Approximately eight to twelve two-by-fours are required to provide enough support throughout the tub. They should not cover the jet holes.
- Arrange the bench planks over the top of two-by-fours and secure them with screws or bolts.
- Connect the tub skimmer to the hole allotted and screw it to the tub sides in order to secure it. Coat with epoxy sealant to prevent leakages.
- Arrange the PVC pipe from the suction and skimmer fittings to an extent of 2”. Apply the sealant so as to avoid leaks.
- Connect about twelve to 24 hot tub jets into the allotted holes and using screws and bolts tighten them. High-speed jets must be positioned on the upper holes and should be used only when you use the tub. Low-speed jets are positioned in lower holes and are used for water circulation.
- Install the PVC piping into the T length and fix them to the jets’ external attachments. Use sealant to waterproof them. You are required to join the pipes before connecting the T fitting.
- Using the PVC piping attach the low-speed jets, skimmer and the pump lines to the water pump of 3/4 hp. In the same manner fix the high-speed jets and the water pump of 2 hp. To avoid leakages apply the sealant.
- Using the PVC piping attach the output of the water pump of 3/4 hp to a heater and water filter. Coat with sealant to prevent leakages.
- Attach a PVC pipe line that will lead away from the designated opening and the filter. Attach a thermowell to the pipe. The thermowell will control the temperature of the water.
- Connect the control box and timer wires to the water pump of 3/4 hp. This will let you control the water periodically keeping it from stagnation.
