Carbon Dioxide poisoning symptoms are easily recognizable. People that suffer from poisoning by Carbon Dioxide are suffering from a condition known as hypercapnia. Hypercapnia is a condition where the body is retaining entirely too much Carbon Dioxidein the blood. The normal human body exhales the Carbon Dioxide amd inhales Oxygen (along with nominal amounts of other elements) through the lungs. Oxygen is used through the bloodstream to power the cells and so on and so forth. Carbon Dioxide is actually the waste material. If the Carbon Dioxide is allowed to build up, because the condition hypercapnia, serious complications can arise. Here are the symptoms of Carbon Dioxide poisoning.
- Tame symptoms. Hypercapnia can be caused by a number of things. Seizures, drug overdoses, severe asthma, COPD, brainstem lesions, obstructive sleep apnea, and even weakened skeletal muscle tissue can cause the condition. At it's most tame state, hypercapnia will cause headaches, confusion, and an inability to think straight. These symptoms, though not deadly, are still associated with the development of Carbon Dioxide poisoning.
- Severe symptoms. The severe symptoms of hypercapnia that lead to Carbon Dioxide poisoning can be fatal if left unchecked. Respiratory failure can be the end result. Muscle twitches, associated with dizziness, flushed skin, increased heart rate and blood pressure, and rapid breathing are signs that hypercapnia is affecting someone. Carbon Dioxide poisoning will be the inevitable next step. All symptoms, tame or severe, should be reported to a doctor immediately.
- Treatment. There are a few methods of assisted breathing that will help to curb the Carbon Dioxide poisoning symptoms. The patient will either have a non-invasive positive pressure ventilation going where the nurse uses an apparatus to shoot oxygen into the lungs. Intubation and mechanical breathing machines are used in severe scenarios.
