• Needle-nose pliers

1. Fish with barbless hooks. Fishing with barbless hooks allows the hook to come out more freely so you can release the fish without injury. If it is stuck in the gullet of the bass, it has a much better chance of sliding out without damaging the guts of the fish. If you don't have catch and release barbless hooks, use pliers to smash the barbs down on the hook you are using. Also, use the pliers to remove the hook after you catch a bass.
2. Release the fish ASAP. The sooner you release the bass back into the water, the better the chance it has for survival. If you need to take a picture of you and the bass, make it quick and then release it. If you want to know what it is like for the bass while you have it out of the water, try holding your breath until you put it back in.
3. Keep your hands off the fish. It has slime on its body that is there to protect it. If you put your hands on the body, you will remove that slime. Try to only handle the fish by the lips. Bass have big enough lips to keep that from being a problem.
