1. Log on to  https://aeprepaid.com/. After logging on to this website, you will be asked to type in the card number into the slot provided. Please note that no spaces should be put between numbers. Doing so will not only allow you to check the balance of your prepaid American Express gift card, but what transactions have been performed on it in the past.
2. A second option is available. If you do not have ready internet access, you can simply go to your nearest convenience store with an ATM, and check the funds there.
