Chemicals In Cigarettes

There are over 4,000 chemicals in cigarettes and over one percent of those chemicals cause cancer. The other chemicals in cigarettes are poisonous to the smoker and anybody else who breathes in the smoke. The smoker absorbs the particles and gases into his body every time he decides to smoke a cigarette. Cigarettes are an addictive device that many people, even when they know the risk of smoking, will not stop using. These are just a few of the chemicals that have been found in cigarettes.

  1. Benzene - This comes from coal and petroleum. It is also found in patients with leukemia, a type of cancer.
  2. Formaldehyde - Some people know this better as embalming fluid which preserves dead bodies. This, too, causes cancer along with respiratory, skin and gastrointestinal problems.
  3. Ammonia - Tis is commonly used as a cleaning supply, but for the cigarettes, t adds the tasty flavor.
  4. Acetone - This is commonly known as nail polish remover.
  5. Tar - This substance covers the lungs every time a cigarette is inhaled. This also causes cancer.
  6. Nicotine - This is an insecticide but also a strong poison that causes a strong addiction to the substance. The bad part about cigarettes is that it can be so addictive that it makes it almost impossible to give up smoking even if the smoker is advised by his doctor for health reasons. By the time the cigarette smoker has become addicted, he will choose to either ignore the information about the cancerous chemicals that he is inhaling or accept the information and hope that the harmful toxins won't affect him as it has many others who smoke.
  7. Carbon Monoxide -  This is a poisonous gas that is formed when the cigarette is lit. This same gas is found in car exhaust fumes.
  8. Arsenic - This chemical is used to kill rodents.
  9. Hydrogen Cyanide - This is a chemical that was used for prison inmates put in the gas chamber.
  10. Dichloro diphenyl trichloroethane -  This is a pesticide also known for causing cancer. The cancerous chemicals in cigarettes are extremely dangerous to anyone who is around to inhale the smoke, and by the time the smoker himself acknowledges the harm that it can do, he will already be addicted to it making it extremely difficult to stop.

As you can see, nothing found in tobacco smoke is beneficial to the smoker's health, yet some of them will continue to smoke even when it becomes as life threatening as cancer. Though the chemicals in cigarettes are found to be harmful not only to the individual but to the others in the vicinity, it is still legal to sell and use this product. Smoking cigarettes somehow has become an outlet to release stress in people's lives and so they use smoking as a form of comfort therapy.
