Looking for chlamydia information? Chlamydia is a sexually transmitted disease. The scientific term for chlamydia is Chlamydia trachomatis. Basically, chlamydia is a bacterial infection of the genital tract. On a yearly basis, approximately 4 million people in the United States are infected with chlamydia, which makes chlamydia one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases in the entire country. Although infected mothers can infect their child with chlamydia during birth, chlamydia is most commonly transmitted via sexual contact.

Unfortunately, you may not know that you have chlamydia until a few weeks after you have been infected with the bacterial infection. For men, common symptoms of chlamydia include lower abdominal pain, testicular pain, and pain while urinating. If you believe that you have chlamydia, it is very important that you see a doctor as soon as possible. A doctor can test you for chlamydia by analyzing a urine sample or by inserting a small cotton swab into the tip of your penis and analyzing the cotton swab.

Luckily, if you are diagnosed with chlamydia, treatment for chlamydia is actually very easy. In most cases, doctors will prescribe an antibiotic medication for chlamydia that you will need to take for up to ten days. While you are being treated for chlamydia, it is very important that you refrain from anal, vaginal, and oral sexual intercourse. It can take up to two weeks for your body to be chlamydia free and you don't want to infect others. To prevent yourself from being infected with chlamydia again, be sure to practice safe sex, which includes, but is not limited to, wearing a condom during all types of sexual intercourse and keeping your sexual contacts to a minimum. Of course, the only way to prevent chlamydia is to practice sexual abstinence.
