What are some of ciprofloxacin uses? This prescription drug is a type of antibiotic medication that can be very useful in specific cases, but it is also important to be aware of possible side effects. Find out what ciprofloxacin, also known as cipro, may be used for and some tips for safe use.

Antibiotic Like other antibiotic drugs, the uses of ciprofloxacin revolve around protecting the body from bacterial infections. This medication cannot simply be used to protect against any type of bacteria. Ciprofloxacin is specifically prescribed for some types of urinary tract infections, respiratory infections, skin infections, infectious diarrhea and bone and joint infections.

Anthrax In case of a biological attack, it will be very useful for hospitals to have plenty of cipro on hand! Not only can it help protect the body from infection by killing many types of bacteria, but it also may be useful for slowing or preventing the progression of illness after exposure to anthrax, according to clinical evidence from 2001.

Viral Infections Ciprofloxacin is not effective against any type of viral infection. This means the antibiotic will not work for many cases of the common cold or influenza, which are caused by an invading virus. This drug can be used to protect the body from some lower respiratory tract infections and even acute sinusitis, but it is only effective against specific strains of bacteria and never against a virus.

Side Effects Despite all the medically beneficial ciprofloxacin uses, it is important to be aware of potential side effects. This medication can increase your risk of developing tendinitis. If symptoms occur, such as any joint swelling, pain or stiffness, you should stop taking the drug and talk to your doctor right away.

Safe Use When prescribed by a doctor, taking cipro can be very important for overcoming disease. Be sure to talk to your doctor about all medications you may be taking, including nutritional supplements, to make sure there are no contradictions. Calcium can affect the absorption of the drug so avoid taking it with a big glass of milk. Do not take ciprofloxacin for any uses other then what your doctor has specifically prescribed it for.
