Coaching Soccer Tactics

Learning coaching soccer tactics can make yourself both a better coach and expand your knowledge of the game. While some of these tactics may be ones that you’re familiar with, hopefully others will be beneficial to your coaching experience. Approach these tactics with an open mind and you’ll be on your way to becoming a better coach.

  1. Learn the players. The first and maybe most important tactic is getting to know your players. If you don’t know your players on at least a first name basis, than you’ll need to at least accomplish this task. But just knowing your players’ skill sets or first name isn’t enough. You need to know things like their hobbies, education, etc. Make a personal connection with your players that will reward both you and them. This will give your players more incentive to play harder for your team.
  2. Treat the team. While working hard, playing hard, and practicing hard are soccer coaching tactics which everyone should practice, treating yourself and the team will also help improve your team’s moral. Reward your team for their successes on and off the field by taking the team out to dinner after the big game, providing food and drinks for your players after practice, and having incentives for personal and team accomplishments. Don’t accidentally create an environment that promotes selfish competition though. With what you learned in step one from knowing your players, you’ll know which tasks to give them.
  3. Make it fun. Another tactic that will help improve yourself as a coach is promoting a fun soccer environment. Invent fun games that will give your players a reason to look forward to practice. Some of these games include scrimmages against fellow coaches or even yourself. While winning is important to every coach, it’s not going to mean very much if it’s done in a manner that isn’t fun for you and your players. Remember that coaching soccer takes time and preparation. But don’t make it into something that doesn’t have to be and enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
  4. Educate yourself. The next tactic that you should employ as a soccer coach is educating yourself. The game of soccer is ever-changing with new rules, tactics, and tips to improve both you and your players’ game. If you don’t have the time to do research, than subscribe to a popular soccer magazine that will contain the tips and rules that you’ll need to improve your game. Besides being an excellent source of knowledge for yourself, this magazine can also benefit your players’ knowledge of the game. If you don’t share the same information that you learn with your players, it won’t do yourself much good on the field in an environment where your players need to make quick decisions.
  5. Formations. Besides educating yourself and treating your players how you’d like to be treated, creating innovative formations will improve your coaching soccer tactics. Some of these formations are limited to your imagination, while others are well-established. These formations include: bringing up defenders when your team is on the offensive, using forwards as your first line of defense before they reach your defenders, letting your goalie take the ball out as far as he or she can to improve your offensive attack, and making your forwards the best passers on the team so they can circulate the ball to midfielders and defenders.
