Constitution Day Activities

There are many Constitution Day activities that you can do in order to celebrate the country’s signing of the constitution on September 17, 1787. The Constitution is the most important document that the US has in order to give freedom to its citizens – those that were either born in the US or those that have been naturalized.

Many people celebrate the holiday through parties and other activities. The way the US government operates, even today, is because of the constitution that was written and signed by thirty-nine men including George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Alexander Hamilton. Some of the best Constitution Day activities to celebrate the day are:

1. Reading of the Constitution. “We the people…” are the famous first words of this document, but many people outside of school age have forgotten what it actually contains. Considering that it is the most important document our government has and is the basis of how it runs, it should be familiar to us. Reading the constitution on Constitution Day is only fitting. It can be something you choose to do in private, or by throwing a party. Many people only need a small reason to throw a party, so a Constitution reading party can be a great theme!
2. Attend a Naturalization Ceremony. Whether you are the one being naturalized or want to see the process, it can be very educational. Watching or participating is a great Constitution Day activity that allows you to see the whole process and learn quite a bit of US history as well. Immigrants will take the Oath of Citizenship and be declared a US citizen, and what better day than this to become an American?
3. Join Twitter. Twitter is one of the most popular social networks where people can talk about virtually anything anywhere in the world. Either start your own “tweet” or join in another one’s about Constitution Day. Find out how other people are celebrating and how everyone enjoys being an American. Quiz people on their knowledge of the constitution and the bill of rights to see how much everyone else knows about the history many of us share.
4. Tour a US History Museum. Grab the whole family, classroom, or walk it alone. Catching up on your US history can be exciting, especially on the day that made it all possible. Find out more about the founding fathers of the United States and how they came to be chosen for forming and writing the Constitution. It is an excellent opportunity to slip in an educational session with kids while keeping it fun, too. Every state has some sort of museum, even if it’s not a large one, so see what’s nearby or ask your local library for help.

However you choose to celebrate Constitution Day, it should be celebrated. Constitution Day activities show that you are proud of your country and your citizenship. They can be done with large groups or as families, but wave your flag proudly that you are an American on Constitution Day.
