CPI Training

CPI training is also referred to Crisis Prevention Intervention Training. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines a crisis as “an unstable or crucial time or state of affairs in which a decisive change is impending; especially: one with the distinct possibility of a highly undesirable outcome.” It has also been defined as a “situation that has reached a critical phase.” Crisis prevention is simply utilizing training and skill to prevent a person or organization from reaching the point of a crisis under these circumstances. Anyone from teachers to human resources officers can benefit from Crisis Prevention Intervention training.

Finding the perfect Crisis Prevention Intervention Training program can be a daunting task. It is best to organize the type of class needed. Length of class should also be a consideration. Finally, consider the reputation of the training program to ensure the best and most accurate information.

The amount of CPI training needed will depend greatly on the industry. For example, a person who conducts business over the phone may require only verbal de-escalation while social workers may require verbal as well as physical crisis prevention techniques. Some industries require a formal certification that must be renewed, while others just simply need the training. Evaluate the individual industry and determine which course works best.

Many schools offer regional training, such as Crisis Prevention Institute and QBS Inc. Students will meet at the school and participate in the training. Some schools offer materials that can be downloaded or studied online; for example, the APTA offers their physical therapy CPI training online. Finally, other schools actually send trainers to the business or office to conduct the training. For example, CMG Associates offers on the site training within 24 hours of a workplace crisis. Jireh also offers an onsite training option.

Course can range from six to forty hours. Certifications are granted at the end of most forty hour courses. Each company should determine the local laws and choose a course accordingly. Crisis situations usually occur without warning. Therefore, there is no substitute for receiving the proper training immediately.

CPI instructors should have a reputation for providing quality training and materials. Many schools have their own individual certification programs that instructors must pass. Research to ensure that the training provider offers the most comprehensive program for each individual company need.
