If you have an older iPod Touch and you're not really sure what you're working with, learning the difference between iPod Touch 2nd and 3rd generation can lead you in the right direction. The differences between the two models are subtle but they do exist.

Like the other generations of Apple iPod Touch models, the second and third generation portable media devices feature a 3.5-inch diagonal widescreen multi-touch display. Other than not taking photos or making phone calls, the iPod Touch includes many of the bells and whistles of the Apple iPhone such as the ability to download and use apps, browse the internet using a Wi-Fi connection and purchase, watch and listen to music and videos from the Applie iTunes Store. However, just as the iPod Touch differs from the iPhone, the second and third generation iPod Touch models have slight differences between one another.

Perhaps most notably, the main difference between the iPod Touch second and third generation is the model number. According to Apple, the second and third generation iPod Touch models have model numbers engraved on the lower back cover of the portable device. A second generation iPod Touch's model number is A1288 while the third generation iPod Touch has a model number of A1318. Though the model numbers are the definitive way to determine if an Apple iPod Touch is a second generation or third generation, there are other differences between the two models.

Similar to the iPhone, as the iPod Touch models evolved, their flash drive storage space increased as well. The second generation iPod Touch model was available in 8 GB, 16 GB or 32 GB models while the third generation stepped up the space with 32 GB and 64 GB capacities.

So there you have it folks, the difference between the iPod Touch second and third generation models are likely not significant enough to make you pick one or the other, but if you really want to go all out, pick up a fourth generation iPod Touch, it comes with a nice camera.
