Different Fishing Tips & Techniques
Using these different fishing tips and techniques can get you a bigger catch and increase your enjoyment of one of the most popular sports in the world.
- Fish under the right conditions. In the spring, save your fishing for the late afternoon and early evening, when the water is warm and contains more oxygen. In the summer, fish in the early morning and after sunset, when fish are still active or becoming active again after the heat of the day has warn off. In the fall, fish in the afternoon and early evening.
- Play the fish. Playing the fish is one of the most useful fishing techniques. When you hook a fish, it's going to fight. Point the rod toward the fish and then give it a quick yank to anchor the hook in the fish's lip. Small fish can be reeled in right away. If you hook a larger fish and it runs, let it go, but begin reeling each time it stops to rest.
- Be careful when you take the hooks out of your fish. You want to be able to land your fish without getting hooked yourself. You can grab bass and other toothless fish species by the lower jaw. This paralyzes the fish and makes it easy to pull the hook out. To take the hooks out of fish with teeth, such as the walleye, grab the fish around the body; if the fish has a strong tail, like a salmon, grab it in front of the tail fin.
- Know when to use a fishing net. If you're fishing for bigger fish, pull them out of the water with a net. Don't try to grab the fish with the net. Instead, put the net in the water and gently guide the fish into it.
