It can be used for a myriad of tasks, not the least of which is cutting away entanglements which could endanger the divers life. There are several type of knives but normally the dive knife is a fixed blade knife, as opposed to a knife with a folding blade. The reason for this is obvious, a fixed blade knife is immediately available for use, whereas a folding knife requires manual dexterity to manipulate, which can be problematic under stress.
The dive knife for men often comes with a brightly colored handle and or sheath which can attach to the harness or the leg of the diver. The purpose for the bright color is for underwater visibility should it be dropped in use. Stainless steels are usually cheaper and easier to sharpen, and the titanium has the advantage of being non-magnetic where that is important. Diving knives also come with either pointed tip blades, or a blunt prying type tip on the blade.
