If you have mistakenly upgraded to the improper firmware version on your device, you will no doubt want to downgrade your iPod Touch. With the wrong version, you may have problems using your device, and the only way to get your iPod Touch back in proper working order is to downgrade it.

  1. Check for the original iPod Touch file. View your files on your computer and check to see whether you have the 3.1.2 IPSW file. If you do not have this file on your computer, you will be unable to downgrade your iPod Touch. However, if you find it, it should be located at C://Users[your username]/AppData/Roaming/AppleComputer/iTunes/iPodSoftwareUpdates .
  2. Disconnect your device. Disconnect your iPod Touch from your computer. If it is not currently connected, then avoid connecting it via USB cable for the time being. You cannot have your computer and device connected while performing the pre-requisites for the downgrade.
  3. Turn off your device. Power off your iPod Touch. Hold the power button for about 10 or 15 seconds and then connect your iPod Touch to your computer via the USB cable it came with. This is a mandatory step in downgrading your iPod Touch.
  4. Wait for the "Connect to iTunes" message. If you see a message telling you that you can connect to iTunes, your iPod Touch is now in recovery mode. This is a key step in downgrading iPod Touch.
  5. Restore your firmware version. While you are in recovery mode, click on the "iPod Touch Device" option at the sidebare on iTunes. Press the "Shift" button and click the restore button. This will prompt you to open the firmware location. To downgrade your iPod Touch, select the location of firmware 3.1.2 and click "OK."
