Downhill skiing techniques are some of the easiest skiing to learn. Downhill skiing, also known as Telemark skiing, is perhaps the most common type of skiing. Downhill techniques are some of the most basic in skiing. Remember that the basic downhill techniques apply to both skis and snowboarding. Working the slopes downhill do possess a few concerns. Downhill techniques for stopping include avoiding others which is key. Once you learn the basic downhill techniques, however, the rest will come easily. Check out these simple downhill techniques.

Skiing:

  1. Start perpendicular to the slope. Turn your bottom-facing ski down the slope. Follow with the opposite foot quickly.
  2. Keep your skis shoulder width apart. Your hands should be out in front of you so you can see them. Ensure you are leaning slightly, with your weight over the balls of your feet.
  3. Of course, the steeper the hill or the longer in the position you are, the faster you will go. This is why it is recommended that you start out with smaller hills or hills with a slight grade.

Slowing down and stopping:

  1. Once you are in motion stopping becomes the next obstacle. Short of forcing a fall or using someone or something to assist you, try this method.
  2. With your heels, push the heel of your skis outward. The toes of your skis should touch or overlap. This will slow your progress.
  3. To stop, maintain this position. If you are simply doing this to slow down, slowly move your skis back into place.

These are two downhill techniques for you to master before you move on to more complex techniques.
