For those in the market for the latest and greatest smartphone, a head to head comparison of the Droid X vs. iPhone 4 is quite useful. Generally considered to be the two best options for the Android and iOS platforms respectively, their matchup is undoubtedly a close one. And while owners of either smartphone will likely swear by the brand they chose, the battle of the Droid X vs iPhone 4 should really be looked at as objectively as possible to find out which is best. So, based solely on specifications and user reviews, here is a head-to-head look at the Droid X and iPhone 4 in important categories.

  1. Camera. One of the major upgrades in the latest iPhone 4 is its camera, which has been increased in capacity to 5 megapixels. The Droid X, however, beats it easily in resolution with 8 megapixels. Both can record video, and both are among the highest quality you’ll find in any smartphone brand. But the simple numbers here are clear. The winner in the camera department is the Droid X.
  2. Memory and Display. It’s this category where things get a little less clear. The iPhone 4’s new retina display is 640 x 960 pixels, and is 3.5 inches in size. The Droid X’s screen, meanwhile, is 854 x 480 pixels, and is 4.3 inches in size. Basically, the iPhone 4’s screen is smaller but has a higher resolution than the Droid X. In terms of built in memory, the iPhone 4’s 16 and 32 gigabyte options clearly beat out the Droid X’s measly 8 gigabytes.
  3. Call reception. For those who primarily use their smartphone to make basic phone calls, the general consensus is in favor of the Droid X. The iPhone 4, as has been much reported, has serious reception problems when held incorrectly, no matter what network you’re using it with. No such problems exist with the Droid X.
  4. Functionality. This essential category in comparing the Droid X vs. the iPhone 4 comes down to consumer preference. The Droid X runs on Google’s Android operating system. It’s renowned for its customizability and the power it gives its users, but has a pretty steep learning curve for those new to the world of smartphones. The iPhone 4’s iOS system, on the other hand, is well liked for the intuitive nature in which it works. Just about anyone can learn to use iOS quickly and effectively, but it comes at the cost of fewer setting and options for the user. To put it simply, power users will appreciate the openness of Android, while regular consumers will be impressed by iOS’s simple elegance.
