Ear Cleaning

If you tackle the task of ear cleaning on a regular basis, you can help keep your amount of ear wax at the proper level. Although ear wax may seem like a sticky nuisance, a small amount actually helps protect your ears. Instead of using cotton swabs or other hard items for ear cleaning, incorporate a simple ear cleaning routine into your daily schedule.

You will need:

  • Mineral oil or hydrogen peroxide
  • Bulb syringe
  1. Rinse your ears with hot water in the shower. This is the simplest way to irrigate excessive ear wax. Avoid hard streams of water, and wipe the outside of your ear clean when you're done.
  2. Place a few drops of mineral oil or household peroxide in your ear on a weekly basis to further tackle the process of ear cleaning. Allow the oil or peroxide to sit in your ear for fifteen minutes. Place a towel to your ear and turn your head sideways to drain the liquid from your ears.
  3. Use a bulb syringe for ear cleaning as necessary. Use the syringe to gently flush your ears when needed.
  4. Seek medical attention if you have a severe blockage that does not clear with regular ear cleaning routines. Signs of a blockage include itching, hearing loss, earache or discharge. Your health care provider can professionally irrigate the blockage and advise you on proper ear care techniques.

Warnings: Inserting cotton swabs or other items in your ear can further clog your ears or damage your ear drum, resulting in hearing loss.
