Earth Day Activities For Kids
Since the birth of Earth Day, there have been many great Earth Day activities for kids. If you need a few ideas to get you started, you've come to the right place. Here's a small sample of great Earth Day activitiy ideas.
- Plant trees. Take the kids to a nearby location that is in need of trees. Give the kids a lesson on the relationship between trees and oxygen levels and why we need them. You can purchase saplings at your local nursery. Revisit the site a year later with the same kids on the next Earth Day.
- Organize a treasure hunt. Find a safe natural location that is suitable for Earth Day activities. Give the kids a list of naturally occurring objects to find in the treasure hunt. This can include granite, dandelions, animal tracks, moss and anything else that the Earth has to offer. Give each of the kids a bucket and a checklist so they can collect the treasures and cross them off of the list. Explain the significance of these natural treasures given to us by the Earth.
- Visit an organic farm. Organic farmers are often more than happy to teach a group of kids the importance of food production using natural methods. Contact a farmer well in advance to find out whether this is possible.
- Read "The Lorax" by Doctor Seuss. "The Lorax" is a great tale of environmental destruction and greed told by the antagonist himself. After reading the book to the kids, start a discussion about the importance of preserving the treasures of the Earth. Read the book outside if the weather is nice for added effect. A "Lorax" reading is definitely one of the classic Earth Day activities for kids.
