Even the most dedicated student can find school to be a grind at times, so these encouraging sayings for students can help rekindle the spark of learning. When the going gets tough, it makes sense to turn to those more experienced for support and enlightenment.

  1. "Learning is not attained by chance; it must be sought for with ardor and diligence." These words of wisdom came from First Lady Abigail Adams, the wife of President John Adams. She understood that a passion for learning is the best way to succeed.
  2. "Learning is the beginning of wealth. Learning is the beginning of health. Learning is the beginning of spirituality. Searching and learning is where the miracle process all begins." Motivational speaker/entrepreneur and author Jim Rhon knows that learning is the origin of all accomplishment. Whatever you want to achieve, no matter how big or small your goal, it must begin with learning.
  3. "Learning is acquired by reading books, but the much more necessary learning, the knowledge of the world, is only to be acquired by reading men and studying all the various facets of them." This sage advice for the student came from the eloquent 17th century British statesman Lord Chesterfield. He accepted that academic learning has value, but social learning is equally, if not more important.
  4. "For a man to attain to an eminent degree in learning costs him time, watching, hunger, nakedness, dizziness in the head, weakness in the stomach and other inconveniences." Miguel de Cervantes, the Spanish novelist best known for "Don Quixote," did not sugar coat the sacrifices sometimes required by students. It is the student's job to make sure that the reward of education is worth the sacrifice.
  5. "The student develops an analytical as well as finely blended character. He is able to choose from a wide variety of job fields from which to embrace a career, without having to be a specialist in one particular discipline." French Astronaut Philippe Perrin shared these thoughts to encourage students. He sees the value in a broad education and following your interests.
