Essential Horse Back Riding Clothes
If you are considering horseback riding as a new hobby then you need to know what essential horseback riding clothes to purchase. Buying the correct clothing for riding will help you and your horse stay comfortable and safe. Knowing what types of clothing are essential will also help you save money.
- Riding boots or shoes. Horseback riding boots are a worthwhile investment if you are serious about riding. The difference between a regular boot and a horseback riding boot is that the riding boot has a one to two inch heel that is angled back in order to catch and hold the stirrup. Riding boots are essential footwear and help you keep proper footing while riding. Riding shoes can be a bit less expensive and function in the same manner as boots. If you own a pair of low-heeled cowboy boots, these may work as well if the heel is set at an angle.
- Riding Helmet or Hat. Most riding schools, public and private, require the rider to wear a regulation hat. Some schools also provide rental hats for lessons. The riding hat is made to withstand one impact only. Once the hat has protected your head it needs to be refitted or recycled and a new hat must be purchased. If you decide to purchase a hat, make sure you purchase it from reputable store. Purchasing a used hat is not recommended. A riding hat can look perfect after sustaining impact and will not be able to protect you when you need it.
- Pants and shirts. Horseback riding pants are called Jodhpurs or Breeches. The main features of these pants are; special padding in the knee and buttock area to improve grip while riding, seam free in the inner leg area to avoid rubbing both you and the horse, made of stretchy material for comfort and fit. If you cannot afford to buy new riding pants, you can wear heavy cotton spandex pants. Horseback riding clothes like pants and shirts should fit neat to the body. Horses spook easily from unexpected noises, flapping clothes, jewelry that jangles or scarves that flutter. If you need to wear a coat or jacket, consider a shorter style so it does not bunch up under your butt while riding.
- Gloves. Riding gloves help protect your hands from rope burns and have padding to prevent blisters. Gloves come in both fingerless and full finger styles. They can be made from spandex or leather. Make sure you try a few pairs on to find the best fit and protection for your hands.
The clothes listed above will help you get started with your new hobby. Having the essential horseback riding clothes will help you stay comfortable and make riding even more enjoyable.
Tips:
- Check with your riding school to see if you need any specialized equipment before attending your first class.
- English style riding may require more horse back riding clothing once you pass the beginner levels.
