These facts about California provide information about one of the most interesting states in America. The Golden State came into existence on September 9, 1850. It contains some of the biggest cities in the world, as well as scenic small towns. Learn more about this diverse state below.

  1. Famous Cities The capital of California is Sacramento. The more well-known California cities are Los Angeles, San Francisco, and San Diego. These cities contain a diverse grouping of residents. Each city houses a variety of cultural sections such as Chinatown, Little Italy, Koreatown, and Little Tokyo.
  2. Famous Landmarks The California missions are hugely popular historical sites, which were built by Spanish missionaries throughout the 1700's and 1800's to convert Native Americans living in California. 21 different missions are located down the length of the state. Another very popular and more modern California destination site is Disneyland theme park, located in Anaheim. California contains coastal cities with great beaches to visit, as well as beautiful vineyards in relaxing wine country. California is also the home of the stars in Hollywood.
  3. Population California has the highest population of any state, estimated at just under 37 million people in 2009. For this reason, California gets 55 electoral votes in elections. The state is typically a shoe-in for the Democratic Party. However, it does contain some of the most Republican areas in the country, such as Orange County.
  4. State Symbols California’s state animal is the California Grizzly Bear and is featured on the state flag. California’s official flower is the Golden Poppy, and the state tree is the gigantic Redwood. The state bird is the Valley Quail, and California’s colors are blue and gold. The state motto is “Eureka” or “I found it,” which refers to the California Gold Rush of 1849 and the sudden discovery of mass quantities of gold in the state.
