Field Hockey Practice Drills
Field hockey practice drills assist in improving a team's game play. Individual and team workouts will increase the skill levels on a whole. The strategy laid out here will help build endurance and play skills along with creating a team work ethic.
- Down the field. The sport of field hockey requires the players to have high stamina. For field hockey practice drills, begin with simple running up and down the field. Let the team start slow and increase speed. This will build endurance and stamina.
- Dribble Down. After a good start of simple running, continue field hockey practice drills by moving to adding the ball into the action. Players grab a stick and a ball and move it up and down the field.
- Stop and start. After getting the dribbling practice in, field hockey practice drills continue by having the players go up and down the field stopping and starting every ten feet. This works on stamina and agility.
- Passing. After the stop and start runs, divide the team into pairs and let them pass the ball back and forth down the field and back.
- Goal Shoot. Following the pass back runs, continue field hockey practice drills by adding in shooting to score at the end of each run of the field between the paired up players.
- Three on Three. The final field hockey practice drills is adding a third person into the passing and shooting runs. This final piece puts realistic passing and shooting into play on the field. For more advanced players, add three defensive players into the mix.
