Find out who your friends are so that you can be sure of who you can depend and count on when times get tough or if you ever need any help. Having friends is an important part of every person's life. Some people prefer to have large numbers of friends, while others would rather build quality relationships with just a few. Neither way is right nor wrong, but it is important that you know who you can consider your true friend and who you should think of as a party buddy or even simply an acquaintance.

  1. Ask for help. This is probably the best way to find out who your real friends are. If you need help moving, finding a new job, or even something small, a real friend will be there for you unless there is something important preventing them from doing so. This is usually the easiest place to separate drinking buddies and acquaintances because they usually will not be willing to sacrifice any of their time to help you out.
  2. Do something for the person. Try doing something nice for the people you consider friends, such as making or buying them a meal or sending them birthday and holiday cards. If the person returns the favor, then you can probably consider him or her a true friend who thinks about you and your wellbeing.
  3. Pay close attention to how the person treats you. Friends should always be respectful and actually care about you as a person. You may consider a person extremely funny and cool, but if they do not show you any real respect then this person is no more than a buddy or acquaintance. Finding out who your friends are can be difficult, and this step may take some time.
  4. Be straightforward. Sometimes it may be really hard to do any of the previous steps because you may not have the time or might be worried you are wasting your time on someone who may not actually be a friend. Another great way to find out who your friends are is simply just to ask them. Communication is an extremely important part of every single relationship you have and can really help you find out who your friends are.
  5. Treat your friends the way you want to be treated. Once you start figuring out who your real friends are, you need to ensure that you keep them around. Try to be there for your friends the way you would want them to be there for you when you need it. Good friendships usually do not just happen out of the blue, but will instead take a lot of time, effort, and commitment.
