Finding trending topics online is a simple process. Both the search engine Google and the social networking site Twitter use trending topics to signal the most popular searches or most mentioned topics on the websites for a certain time period. Here's a brief explanation of how to find trending topics on Google and Twitter.
Things You'll Need:
- A computer or a smartphone with Internet access
- A Twitter account
- Visit the Google Trends website at http://www.google.com/trends. On the homepage is a list of "Hot Searches" for your particular country. These search terms show the top ten trending topics that have been searched for on that day. Select the "More Hot Searches" link at the bottom of the screen to see more search terms that have been popular recently. Click on any topic to find out the news or search results for that term. You will also see a graph showing the search volume for each topic by time period.
- Find trending topics on Twitter by visiting the Twitter homepage at http://www.twitter.com. A list of popular trending topics, some marked by hashtags, appears on the homescreen. After you sign into your account, you will see a list of "Trends" on the right side of the screen. You can change your trending topic search to search worldwide or just your home country. Click on a trending topic to see the top tweets about that term.
- Use Twitter Search to access more trending topics. Visit the search page at http://www.search.twitter.com. A list of trending topics will appear at the bottom of the screen. Click on one of the search terms to see the list of tweets that have mentioned that topic.
