Every fisherman wants to know these fish catching tips. You can’t be a fisherman without catching fish. Even if you practice catch and release, you still have to catch the fish first. The best fish catching tips are ruled by common sense, knowledge, patience and a little luck.

To practice these fish catching tips you will need:

  • Fish
  • Fishing license
  • Fishing rod, reel, line and tackle
  • Bait, including lures
  • Fishing knife
  • Gloves
  • Hip or full body waders, if walking into water
  • Creel or cooler for storing the fish
  • First aid kit
  • Boat, if needed
  • Depth finder, if using a boat
  1. Determine what kind of fishing you want to do. Do you want to fish in freshwater or salt water? What kind of fish do you want to catch? Check with your state's fish and game commission for the types of fish in your area.
  2. Purchase a fishing license. Most states require fishing licenses to fish, even in your own backyard. You can be fined fishing without a license. Fines range from $25 to hundreds of dollars.
  3. Have the proper equipment. Choose a rod and reel that works best with the type of fish you want to catch. Consider the weight of fishing line you will need. Clothing should also be considered equipment. Dress according to the area and water you will be fishing in.
  4. Go where the fish are. Fishing for salmon in a pond won’t work. Know where to find the fish you want to catch. When you buy bait at your local bait and tackle shop, ask for fish catching tips along with the most popular fishing holes. If you purchase your fishing license from the fish and game commission, be sure to ask what areas are best for fishing.
  5. Know your fish. Is the fish you are trying to catch a bottom dweller? Fresh water or salt water? Do they like to feed in the morning or the evening? Do they swim in schools? Knowing the habits and idiosyncrasies of each type of fish is a great fish catching tip.
  6. Use the correct bait. What to use for bait is a question on every fisherman’s mind and one of the most kept secrets of a successful fisherman. Know the type of bait that works the best to catch the fish you want. Worms, flies, spinners, Velveeta cheese and smaller fish are bait that can be used. Another fish catching tip is to use live bait whenever possible.
  7. Use common sense and observe your surroundings. Use your eyes and ears to check out the area you want to fish. Is the water clean? Is it windy? Are there other fishermen around? Is the tide low? Is the water muddy? Knowing the habits of the fish you’ve chosen helps define the best fishing spots.
  8. Try a depth finder if fishing from a boat. A depth finder is a device that shows you the structure of the bottom of the lake or pond. With training you can learn to read the display and see where the fish are. Too bad they don’t make depth finders for fishing rods.
  9. Practice patience. It truly is a virtue and one of the best fish catching tips ever. Many a fisherman have given up a spot only to have someone new come in and catch a fish minutes after they left. Relax. Fish can sense tension. Enjoy the water, sun and just being out in nature.

Fishing can be a really fun sport when you actually catch fish. These fish catching tips will help you achieve your goal of catching a "big one."
