Staying in shape is easier said than done - and these fitness quotes capture the commitment that is required to stay physically fit. The health benefits for partaking in a fitness routine are not just helpful, but can be a matter of life and death. If you are feeling reluctant to get off that "coffin for the living" known as your sofa - enjoy these fitness quotes.

  1. Mohandas Gandhi : "It is health that is real wealth and not pieces of gold and silver." You can be a multi-billionaire, but if you are in poor health you unfortunately may not live long enough to enjoy it. Gandhi understands that good health gives us more time to live, and time what allows us to enjoy the byproducts of life - such as gold and silver. His quote shows that a fitness routine will add more value to our quality of life, and add quantity to our life span as well.
  2. Thomas Jefferson: "Leave all the afternoon for exercise and recreation, which are as necessary as reading. I will rather say more necessary because health is worth more than learning." Intellectuals may disagree with Jefferson's fitness quote, but that mental organ will not have any opportunity to store knowledge if our heart stops beating. We can read about other people's lives, and the great accomplishments that have occurred around us, but those things required people with enough physical endurance to complete them. The better shape our body is in will also lead to a stronger mind to remember all those interesting facts that we can read after our fitness workout.
  3. Steven Wright: "A lot of people are afraid of heights. Not me, I'm afraid of widths." This humorous quote from Steven Wright speaks to his fitness phobia of becoming overweight. In a society that hurls negative attention towards heavier people, Wright illuminates this fact with his quote. Weight becomes a problem when it interrupts your health, but not because you need to lose weight to look like an anorexic bikini model.
  4.  George A. Sheehan: "Exercise is done against one's wishes and maintained only because the alternative is worse." Most people dread working out consistently because of the pain and boredom of repeating these strenuous acts. But this fitness quote also cleverly states that if we don't we will be even worse off. Jogging doesn't sound like such a bad idea after all.
