Fly fishing knots come in all sizes and shapes, and you can learn to tie a few good knots with these fly fishing knot tying tips. You are better off knowing how to tie just a few knots very well instead of a lot of knots that are not tied well. Since it is one of the most important parts of fly fishing, it will be worth it to spend some time learning about fly fishing knot tying.

  1. A good fly fishing knot is easy to tie while on the water. You can't be spending a lot of time tying the knot when you are out on the boat. If it is too difficult, all the fish will be gone by the time you get your fly in the water.
  2. A fly fishing knot doesn't have to be complicated. A complicated knot is not necessarily a good knot. Learn to tie an effective all around knot like the Uni-Knot to get you started. A knot like this can be used for several different things such as to tie on strike indicators and to attach backing to a reel.
  3. Lubricate knots before tightening them. This will help to make sure the knot stays secure. It also helps the knot slide easily, and keeps the line cool. If the line heats up, it can cause friction and weaken the line.
  4. Test it. Before you use out fly fishing, test the knot to make sure it is secure. One of the worst things is when you have a big fish on your line and you end up losing it because the knot comes untied.
  5. Clip excess material away. When you clip the extra material away, use a pair of sharp fingernail clippers. This will help to make sure you don't knick the knot.
