1. Keep your fly rod clean. Keeping the fly rod clean is not hard, and will help you handle the rod better. The fly rod has a tendency to get dirty over time from grime and oil from the hands, but it is easily cleaned by using just plain rubbing alcohol and a rag. If the dirt is caked on, consider using a stronger detergent to clean the rod.
2. Use the right fly color. The color of your flies should change with the seasons. Late fall, winter, and early spring flies should be darker in color, and should match the color of the environment. During summer and warmer months, lighter flies should be used. 
3. Approach from behind. Especially when fishing for trout, it is best to approach the fish from outside of the cone of visibility. Be sure to stay low to lower the chances of the fish seeing you. 
4. Walk slowly and softly. Do not make a lot of noise while approaching the fish, as they are extremely sensitive to sounds and vibration. Remember that the fish are not stupid, and are not unaware of your presence, or your intent to hunt them. 
5. Casting a straight line. If you are casting for fish in a very still body of water, make sure you cast your line as straight as you possibly can. If there is no current or turbulence in the water, this will greatly increase your hook-up percentage. 
6. Keep you hooks sharp. Never let your hooks go dull, as keeping the hooks sharp will be better for catching. It is wise to keep a stone with you to occasionally sharpen up your hooks. 
7. Do not adjust the drag. Although it may be tempting, don't adjust or pull at your drag during the playing of fish. 
8. Move quickly while playing and landing. It is important to play and land fish as quickly as possible. Additional stress on the fish may prevent the fish from surviving, so it is best to move fast.
