- Get in gear. Before you can compete in folkstyle wrestling, you need to have the right gear. The shoes, for example, need to be approved wrestling shoes that can be worn on the mat. A singlet is the spandex garment that’s worn during the match. Your headgear is probably the most important thing you wear during a folkstyle wrestling match. It protects your ears from injury. Other gear you can choose to wear includes leggings, knee pads, face masks and a mouth guard.
- Find out your weight class. In folkstyle wrestling, only wrestlers within the same weight class compete against each other. Sometimes, wrestlers might be in between weight classes, meaning it would be in your best interest to either gain or lose a small amount of weight. Do not succumb to pressure to gain or lose large amounts of weight. It’s not healthy.
- Learn more about the scoring. Folkstyle wrestling has an intricate scoring system where you get certain amounts of points for different types of moves. For example, a takedown is worth two points, while an escape is only worth one point. You can also lose points for penalties, such as illegal holds or stalling.
