Free Diving Techniques
To fully enjoy the aquatic scenery, proper free diving techniques are required. Free diving is used in many aquatic activities and requires the participant to hold his breath for periods of time while diving underwater. Activities that share this aspect in common are spear fishing and free dive photography, amongst other things.
To free dive, you will need:
- Warm Up. Do not hop into the cold water immediately. The diver should do breathing exercises before entering the water, so he will be able to travel down to deeper depths. To do breathing exercises, you hold your breath until you begin to feel slightly lightheaded, then release and take deep breaths. Do this five to six times. By the sixth time you should be able to hold your breath for well over two minutes if done properly. This is one of the more important free dive techniques because it has a direct effect on how long you will be able to stay submerged underwater.
- Clear ears often and frequently. Clearing ears is necessary for the pressure that will be experienced while underwater. If you do not clear your ears, you may feel pain when you reach measurable depths.
- Dive into the water. There are numerous entries into the water; it all has to do with preference. The head-first submersion technique is recommended amongst the various free dive techniques. With the head-first submersion technique, you stretch your arms out in front of your head and fold the waist, creating a 90 degree angle between your stomach and thighs. The feet should remain on the surface. Straighten your leg up vertically and your body will begin to sink by virtue of your body weight.
- Conserve energy. The more energy that is exerted, the more oxygen that is being wasted. Your muscles use up oxygen when you stress yourself and contract your muscles. It is imperative you control yourself and try to limit your anxiety so you waste less oxygen and stay submerged for a longer period of time. This is one of the wiser free dive techniques because it has a fair amount of influence on the ease with which you will be able to hold your breath underwater.
- Equalize pressure. The deeper you dive, the more pressure is being exerted on your body. This pressure has a direct effect on your sinuses, which can impede your ability to dive further and be potentially hazardous. To equalize the pressure, adhere to the second of the free dive techniques listed above. Besides clearing your ears, blow air against your sealed nose. Swallowing is another technique known to equalize the pressure against your ears.
These are techniques to be used while free diving. Preparation beforehand is necessary as well. It is recommended that free divers participate in yoga exercises for improving breath control. Distance swimming would allow the divers to improve their muscle conditioning, which is necessary for prolonged periods of diving.
