Ghana Wins 2009 World Cup
The 2009 FIFA U-20 World Cup was a soccer tournament hosted by Egypt. All of the matches were played in locations throughout Egypt. The tournament started on September 24, 2009 and concluded on October 16, 2009. The tournament was wildly contested and saw Ghana win their first World Cup trophy. The World Cup distributes teams in groups. As a result Ghana was placed in group D with Uruguay, Uzbekistan and England. Ghana played their first match on September 26 defeating Uzbekistan 2-1. Their next match had them face soccer power England, the British were no match as Ghana defeated them 4-0. The win earned Ghana a birth in the Round of 16.
In the Round of 16, Ghana defeated South Africa 2-1. In the quarterfinals they defeated the Korea Republic 3-2. In the semifinals Ghana defeated Hungary 3-2. This set up a showdown with Brazil in the final. The match was no contest on paper. Brazil was known worldwide as a soccer power. Winners of four World Cup Championships they were the solid favorite. Ghana entered the match as underdogs eager for their first taste of World Cup Championship success. With the match in Africa it was a chance for Ghana to come out on its home continent and win a historic match. Both teams played each other close throughout regulation. After playing to a scoreless tie Ghana defeated Brazil 4-3 in a penalty shoot out to earn their first World Cup Championship.
