Guide To Standup Paddle Surfing
The following is a guide to stand up paddle surfing. This technique is fun to perform and looks really cool. It's a little dangerous for beginners, so make sure you have the proper gear and are in good physical shape before attempting to stand up paddle surf.
To follow this guide to stand up paddle surfing, you will need:
- A surfboard
- A life jacket
- A paddle
- Access to a beach
Steps
- The best way to learn stand up paddle surfing is to go very slowly. If you are able to practice on a lake instead of on the ocean, than you may find it easier to learn. If you don't have access to a lake, choose a day that has very little wind and small waves.
- Start surfing on your knees. This will help you get a feel for the waves and the board. Wade out into the water so that it is just a few feet deep and then slide onto your board on your knees.
- Next, you will need to get a feel for paddling. It may be difficult for you to stay on the board at first and you might fall off many times. This is perfectly natural. The process of learning how to stay on the board and how to paddle will help you acquire your stand up paddle surfing skills.
- After you feel you have a good sense of how the paddle works and you are able to stay on the board with ease, you will need to force yourself into a standing position. The best way to do this is to pop onto your feet by placing your hands in front of your knees and using them to help you jump up and land on your feet. This may take some practice.
-
Try to land with your feet apart and nearly touching the edges of the board.
-
Stick your paddle into the water as quickly as possible, this will help you gain stability.
- Use your paddle in the same manner you did while kneeling on the board. Get a good feel for stand up paddle surfing before moving onto any tricks.
