Is The H1N1 Vaccine Safe
When H1N1 flu shots were given in 2009, many people wondered is the H1N1 flu vaccine safe. After that year, the H1N1 vaccine has been incorporated within the regular seasonal flu shot. Talk to your doctor about whether a flu shot is right for you.
- Same safety as the seasonal flu shot. The H1N1 shot was just as safe as a regular flu shot, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Flu shots have a good record of being safe for most people.
- Side effects of H1N1 vaccine. Although many people have no reaction whatsoever, those who do have a reaction to the H1N1 shot may experience soreness, swelling or redness at the site of the shot. Some may also experience headaches, fever, nausea or dizziness related to the H1N1 vaccine.
- When to call your doctor. Side effects from the H1N1 vaccine are not common. However, if you suspect you are having an adverse reaction, call you doctor or go to your local emergency room. Symptoms of an adverse reaction to the H1N1 vaccine include a high fever, wheezing, developing hives, or having a hard time breathing.
- Who should avoid the H1N1 vaccine. The H1N1 vaccine is considered safe for most people, even pregnant women. People who are allergic to chicken eggs should avoid this vaccine or ask their doctor about alternatives.
The most common H1N1 vaccine, given in shot form, is made from dead viruses, so you can't get the flu from this shot, although that's a common fear. The inhaled version of the vaccine contains weakened virus which also should not be able to make you sick.
