Hair Folicle Drug Test Facts

Hair follicle drug test facts may be of interest to you if you are subjected to random drug testing at your place of employment or if you are on parole or probation. Random drug testing has been commonplace in most work environments, even in large corporations and Fortune 500 companies. Drug testing is also used where dangerous work is performed, such as a mill or construction company.

Hair follicle drug testing is often used in pre-employment drug testing because the hair is a detailed map into a person's lifestyle. The hair follicle holds onto drug history much longer than the urine, blood and saliva tests that are available. The longer a hair, the longer drug activity can be traced. If hair is unavailable, other body hair will make an acceptable substitute.

There are five types of drugs that can be tested for during a hair follicle drug test: cocaine, marijuana, opiates, phencyclidine and methamphetamines. Between 55 and 75 hairs are necessary to perform the hair follicle drug tests; that is about a 45mg sample, which is about 1/100 of an ounce.

Hair follicle drug testing is a more detailed form of drug testing compared to urine, saliva or blood testing. The trace of drugs can be found in the hair after a longer period of time than other forms of drug testing. Hair follicle drug testing provides a history or pattern of drug use as well.
