When they met and fell in love on the set of “Brokeback Mountain,” no one would have predicted the ultimate Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams split. After all, they were both talented, attractive, and very much in love. But as is the case with most Hollywood romances, it was just a matter of time before their relationship was over.
Australian movie star Heath Ledger and American TV actress Michelle Williams met in 2004 while filming the Ang Lee epic “Brokeback Mountain.” Prior to that Heath was best known for roles in films like “Ten Things I Hate About You,” “The Patriot,” and “A Knight’s Tale.” She had been one of the young stars of “Dawson’s Creek.” But by the time filming wrapped on the cowboy romance, everyone knew that they were a couple and no one was thinking about the eventual Heather Ledger and Michelle Williams split.
The happy couple bought a brownstone in the Boerum Hill area in Brooklyn, New York and settled into their new lives. During a red carpet event for Heath’s film “The Brother’s Grimm” in 2005, Heather Ledger and Michelle Williams confirmed that not only were they engaged, but that she was carrying his child. Baby girl Matilda was born on October 28, 2005 and seemed like the ultimate glue that would prevent a Heather Ledger and Michelle Williams split.
But cracks started to show in the relationship and by January 2007, reports of a possible Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams split were circulating. The break-up became official in September of that year. And although they seemed very much in love, they said their relationship ended because of conflicting schedules and getting so serious so young. At the time of their split, Heath Ledger was just 28 years old and Michelle Williams was 27.
Sadly there would be no chance for reconciliation. The Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams split was permanently sealed just four months later. On January 22, 2008, Heath Ledger was found dead in his apartment at 421 Broome Street in SoHo in New York City. The cause of death was officially ruled an accidental overdose from a toxic combination of prescription medications. Many reports claim he was struggling with insomnia during the filming of “The Dark Knight.” Others point to his depression over the Heath Ledger and Michelle Williams split.
Michelle Williams was reportedly devastated by the news. She ultimately started dating director Spike Jonze but later admitted that she had entered into the relationship too soon after Heath Ledger’s death.
