When it comes to beer, Heineken has got one of the longest and noblest histories around, making Heineken beer: quick history a really interesting read. These days, the Heineken beer in the green bottle you know and love is produced in hundreds of breweries in over 60 countries around the globe. Before the company could turn into an international sensation, however, it had to start small.

Heineken beer was first invented in 1864 by Gerard Adriaan Heineken, a young brewer in Amsterdam. The brewing company began to grow quickly, and in 1886, Heineken developed the unique variety of yeast that is still the special ingredient in their beer today. Gerard's son took over the business in the early 1900s and helped it expand beyond the small Dutch markets they had started in.

It wasn't until the end of World War I, however, that the Heineken beer company set its sights on the global market. A major setback for exportation was the institution of prohibition in the US. Three days after that mandate was lifted, though, Heineken shipped its first case to America. That shipment paved the way for Heineken to become a new favorite in the United States. Decades later, the signature green bottle and red star still remains one of the most highly imported beers in the US.

During the expansion that took place in the post-war years, Heineken was smart about acquiring a number of smaller breweries and brands to strengthen their company. You may not know it but Amstel, Zagorka, Birra Moretti, and Jillz all fall under the Heineken corporation.
