Next was the Macintosh Portable in 1989 and the PowerBook in 1991, which were responsible for pioneering the modern laptop. The latter was greatly aided by System 7, the basis for Mac OS until 2001. Apple was able to compete with Windows throughout these years, notably allying with IBM and Motorola in the 1990s.
Recent Years. In the last decade or two Apple has continued to provide breakthroughs. A number of media-based (video, music composition, etc.) software titles were launched in the late 1990s and 2000s. The iPod and subsequent iTunes store – which had over 5 billion downloads in 5 years – were seen in the early 2000s. The decision to produce Intel-based Mac computers in 2006 was another important milestone.
