Fashion fans will love to learn the history of Ben Sherman. British fashion icon Ben Sherman created a brand that has been designing stylish men’s shirts for nearly 50 years. The brand first gained attention with their classic long sleeve button up, debuting on the market in 1963 and still popular today. This original design was inspired by American Ivy Leaguers and in 1967, after four years selling around both Europe and the US, Sherman opened his own shop in Brighton. Ben Sherman is known as one of the most innovative British designers in menswear, and his influence on British fashion is still recognized today.
While most of his designs were for men, Sherman did make some women’s blouses. In all his products, her managed to take a classic shirt structure and use his own unique designs to make the traditional suddenly original. Sherman’s line was also well known for the high quality of the garments made. Ben Sherman shirts are well made and are known to last a long time, with some original samples from the '60s still intact today. At the time, the black box with the orange Ben Sherman logo was nearly as iconic as the clothing itself. Ben Sherman’s TV commercials helped spread the brand and the ads themselves were well known for their comedy.
Sherman remained involved in the company until 1975, when he sold the business and moved to Australia. He died in 1987. Today, the brand sells more than shirts. Their men’s suits and shoes have also found success in both the European and American fashion markets.
