The history of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association (NEPSIHA) is best characterized by the many notable names that have emerged from it. Under the direction of President Pat Dennehy, NEPSIHA has not only become a thriving high school league for young players to develop their talent, but also a leading source of Division I college recruitment on the East Coast. With 62 current member schools, the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association is continuing its legacy and expanding further.
Taking a look at the history of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association, you have to take note of NEPSIHA’s most famous alumnus: Jeremy Roenick. At the young age of fourteen, Roenick was in the process of turning a hobby into a lifelong career by starting his hockey journey at NEPSIHA member school Thayer Academy. Roenick’s time at Thayer, from 1985 through 1988, wasn’t just a good place for him to hone his skills, but also the exact spot where his professional career would get its start. Because of his impressive playing with Thayer, Roenick was drafted eighth overall in the 1988 NHL draft. Playing for the Blackhawks, Coyotes, Flyers and more, Roenick used his eleven years in the NHL to become the most famous graduate in the history of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association.
Jeremy Roenick isn’t the only former member of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association to make hockey history at Thayer Academy, though. Roenick skated alongside Tony Amonte, another star player who entered the NHL in the 1988 draft. Amonte spent the majority of his career with the Chicago Blackhawks and ranks ninth in all-time NHL points by an American-born individual. Along with Roenick and Amonte, NHL headliners Brian Leetch, Craig Janney and Don Sweeney all started their career at and shaped the history of the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association.
With an incredibly successful list of alumni and an ever-growing body of member schools, the New England Prep School Ice Hockey Association is truly a leader in the development of young ice hockey talent throughout the world. While its history is impressive, one can only imagine what the future has in store.
