History Of Tom Ford
Take a look at the history of Tom Ford; here, we take a look at the amazing change within the Gucci house which vaulted this man to astounding accomplishments.
Tom Ford was born in Austin, Texas on August 27, 1961, to Tom Ford and Shirley Burton. He spent his early life in Houston, San Marcos, and Sante Fe, New Mexico. At the age of 17, Tom Ford moved to New York to attend the university and study art history. After only one year, he dropped out of N.Y.U. preferring to act in television commercials of which he seemed to be very successful. Ford then studied interior architecture at Parsons' The New School for Design. While in New York, Ford became a regular at the nightclub, Studio 54. Here is where he realized that he was gay. The club's disco influence would also later influence his design styles. Before his last year of school, Ford spent a year in Paris as an intern for Chloe's press office. His internship sparked his love for fashion into being. He spent his last year in the New School studying fashion but nevertheless, graduated with a degree in architecture. Despite his lack of experience, Ford eventually landed a job with Hardwick as a design assistant.
In 1988, Ford moved to Perry Ellis, where he knew Robert McDonald and Marc Jacobs socially. He stayed with Perry Ellis for two years.
In 1990, Gucci hired Ford as the chief of the women's ready-to-wear designers. That September, Ford and his longtime partner, fashion journalist Richard Buckley, relocated to Milan. Within months, Ford was designing menswear, then shoes. In 1992, Ford took the job of design director. With this position, Ford took charge of ready-to-wear, fragrances, image, advertising and store design.
Between the years of 1994 and 2004, Ford clashed many times with Maurizio Gucci, the company's chairman and 50% owner. Ford was then promoted to creative director and took the Gucci house from near bankruptcy to the value of $4.3 billion. When Ford left in 2004, the Gucci group was valued at $10 billion. Ford created his own line: the TOM FORD brand. He was joined by Gucci group president and chief executive officer Domenico De Sole, who serves as chairman of the company.
In April 2007, the TOM FORD brand opened its first flagship store in New York. Presently, there are 21 stores in locations such as Milan, Tokyo, Las Vegas, Dubai, Zurich and Russia. Since his menswear launched, Tom has dressed Hollywood stars such as Brad Pitt, Tom Hanks, and Johnny Depp.
As if his fashion fame is not enough, Tom Ford is also a producer. Tom Ford's ambition and fame are amazing. What this man accomplished in a couple of decades, others couldn't even accomplish in a lifetime.
