Hockey Skate Sizing Guide

Looking for a hockey skate sizing guide? Proper hockey skate sizing is vital if you want to have comfortable skates that will support your style of play and the time you spend on the ice. Hockey skates are not fitted in the same way that shoes are, so you'll need to consult a hockey skate sizing guide like this one to be sure you get the right size skates for you.

  1. Find out what size is best for you. As a general rule, hockey skates should be one to one-and-a-half sizes smaller than your street shoes. However, just guessing on your skate size based on your shoe size won't guarantee a good fit. The best way to determine the right size for you is to consult with a salesperson who has experience in sizing skates.
  2. Test the fit. Unlike regular street shoes, hockey skates should fit snugly around your foot. Your toe should barely touch the toe cap on the inside of the skate, and there should be a slight amount of space in the heel, but no more than a half-inch. Your hockey skates should fit snugly against the sides of your feet as well, so that your foot doesn't slide around inside as you skate and maneuver.
  3. Test the flexibility. Fit alone won't provide the optimal skating experience. Test the way your feet can move inside the skate. You'll want a skate with sufficient ankle support to prevent injury but also enough flexibility to allow you to easily maneuver.
  4. Test the comfort. Hockey skates are lined with material to ensure your feet will be comfortable. Cheaper skates might not have sufficient padding, and different brands of skates might distribute the padding slightly differently. Test different kinds to find the skates that accommodate your feet the best. If you plan to do a lot of skating, you'll be thankful for the extra time you took shopping.

As with any hockey gear, don't always settle for the least expensive. At the same time, don't assume the most expensive gear will be the best. Take the time to find skates that are truly comfortable for your feet and your feet will stay happy no matter how long you spend on the ice.
