Use these horseback riding on the beach tips if you want the experience to be as exhilarating as it looks in the movies. When you picture yourself galloping in the waves with the sun high in the sky and the waves splashing around the horse, you also need to remember that you need to be prepared. Both you and your horse will need some extras.

  1. Bring water. If you are horseback riding on the beach the only water available is salt water. Horses can be picky about the water they drink and if it doesn't smell right or taste right they won't drink it.
  2. Make sure your horse is in good shape. Running on the beach sand is harder work for your horse than most trail riding. It can also strain their tendons. The best place for riding on the beach is close to the surf where the sand is packed down and harder.
  3. Go with a seasoned horse. The sound of the waves on the beach can spook a horse. You are more likely to be able to ride with a horse that is seasoned and doesn't spook as easily. A young horse who hasn't had much experience and built up their trust in you might refuse to go near the water.
  4. Make sure your horse is allowed on the beach. You can call park services for the area you want to ride to make sure you and your horse will be allowed to ride on the beach. There are some areas that have strict rules about animals on the beach during certain times of the year and in certain areas.
