How To Act Emo

To learn how to act emo, you will need to get in touch with your sensitive side and let it show. Although the term emo originated from a form of punk rock and indie music, it’s more than just a genre. Emo is a lifestyle based on strong emotion, individualism, and self-expression. You will need to embody these ideas if you want to act emo convincingly.

  1. Accept your feelings and share them with others. To act emo, get in touch with your feelings, regardless of how sad, dark, or negative they are. Avoid social pressures to act happy, optimistic, and outgoing and you will further your emo persona.
  2. Express yourself openly. If you want to act emo, simply understanding your feelings isn’t enough; you need to share them with your friends and acquaintances. To express your feelings and act emo, start a blog or online journal, write songs about your life experiences, or create visual art that depict your deepest emotions.
  3. Listen to music that evokes strong feelings. Although people associate bands such as Dashboard Confessional, Jimmy Eat World, and New Found Glory with people who act emo, you don’t’ need to listen to any specific type of music to fit into the subculture. To act emo, it is more important to make musical choices that speak to your personal feelings and experiences.  
  4. Dress the part. If you want to fit into emo culture, make sure that your wardrobe includes skinny jeans, studded belts, tight vintage t-shirts, skater sneakers, and wristbands. If you want to go the extra step and get an emo hairstyle, opt for long bangs and dark black or brightly colored hair dye.
